The North Shattuck Association will present the 2nd Annual Spice of Life Festival on Sunday October 17, 2004 in the heart of North Berkeley’s ‘Gourmet Ghetto’. The blocks of Shattuck Ave. from Virginia to Vine Sts., and on Vine St. from Shattuck to Walnut St. are the site for this premier food and arts festival, which draws over 10,000 people from the immediate area and the region and highlights the retail area’s community of high-quality food purveyors, artisans, health practitioners, and unique independent merchants.

This year’s Spice of Life Festival will feature:

~ Live music featuring performances presented by Berkeley’s renowned Jazzschool

~ Flamenco and other dance performances by local artists hosted by Café de la Paz

~ Fine food offerings from area restaurants and food purveyors including The Cheeseboard and Cesar

~ Cooking demonstrations by gourmet restaurateurs on our chef and culinary arts stage

~ Sampling and sales of dozens of fine food products including Narsai’s Gourmet Condiments

~ Wine and beer tasting & sales featuring local and regional producers

~ An all-organic Farmer’s Market presented by the Ecology Center of Berkeley

~ Original art, ceramics, and jewelry by members of the Arts and Crafts Collective (ACCI) and over 50 other selected Bay Area artisans and crafters

~ Book readings, signings & sales featuring culinary, health, travel and literary authors hosted by Black Oak Books and Easygoing Travel & Books

~ A children’s area with arts & crafts activities, storytelling, pony rides and farm animals

~ A silent auction of goods and services from area businesses to benefit the Chez Panisse Foundation’s Edible Schoolyard Project and Berkeley High School’s Community Partnership Academy

In addition to numerous area businesses and restaurants, other vendors and exhibitors include local schools, realtors, health practitioners, and non-profit organizations presenting information on health issues, organic gardening and sustainable agriculture, recycling and composting, social activism, and Berkeley history.

The Spice of Life Festival is promoted through a variety of media and organizational outlets, including local newspapers, radio, and the internet. Sponsorship opportunities and vendor space are still available for uniquely North Berkeley event -- please contact the North Shattuck Association for more information.
